Character Ideas

Postby RJ » Thu Jun 12, 2008 1:05 am

Did anyone have any character ideas or concepts yet? Has anyone else got the 4E books yet? I know we will probably spend some time creating characters at the game but I wanted to see if anyone had any idea of what they wanted to play.

I know Charles wants to play one of those 'dragondudes', anyone else have a preference? Anyone going to try a Tiefling or Eladrin? If we played in Eberron are the Eberron races in the Monster Manual?

Dragonborn Warlord. I'll probably work toward the Knight Commander path.

The Warlord tends to be a front-line fighter, and has some neat abilities to inspire allies, and provide some minor healing. This class appeals me quite a bit.

The more I look through the book, the more excited I get to play this.

I don't have access to the books yet; I'd want to see the flavor text and crunchy bits to see what sounds the most fun. In general I'm up to playing just about anything though - if there's a funky race that no one else has chosen, I might pick it to see how it plays.

I don't know enough about the background of the adventure to come up with any character concepts based on that yet.

Still waiting on my books... They are in route...

Mostly I was wanting to see if anyones character would fit in with the adventure Hooks. Most can be used on the fly but a couple of the ones with some deeper backround give nice XP bonuses. I can prob make most fit in with somebody/group on the fly.

I don't have the books... I was kinda hoping to playtest before I decided. Yeah, I know I'll probably get them eventually anyway... But I doubt I'll have them before the game.

I want to play a Gnome Assassin. :)

I hear the game is becoming much more combat-focussed, like a MMORPG, which disappoints me. So naturally, me being me, I want to push the system and play a less-combat-focussed character. But I don't really know my options. Probably a rogue type character, because those are my traditional favorites.

Are we doing chargen at the session, or are you doing pregen characters for us, RJ?

He said we would do character generation at the session, unless he's changed his mind. Hopefully I'll stop playing videogames and make mine beforehand, so I can assist others.

I figured not everyone would have a set of books so we will do character creation at the game. We should have at least 2 sets of books and 1 digital set. I figure the people with the books can try to create their charcters early and assist anyone who needs it at the game.

I had thought about using pregens but decided not too. I did not care for the module pregens and mine would probably be too optimized and probably not to everyones tastes.

I think you are correct that the game seems much more combat focused now. The module has a ton of encounters in it, I would compare it almost to Warhammer/Hero Quest. There are still roleplaying parts but the majority is combat oriented. I do like some of the skill challenges that are introduced and how they incorporate them into the RP aspect.

Rogues in 4E are now considered Striker's aka damage dealers, although they can still do sneaking and thievery. I think I read somewhere that wizards are almost better trap disablers but that may have only applied to magical traps. I think many of our preconceptions of classes and their roles have been changed in 4E, unfortunately I think there is less flexibility to get away from the new roles.

Finally got my books yesterday.

If anyone has access to the books and wants to make their character ahead of time you can use Method-2 for ability scores. Which is basically a modified point buy system.

Has anyone but Charles said what they want to play? I generally enjoy picking my character based on what role is needed, etc. Nothing is jumping out at me in a big way at the moment, so narrowing my selection may help me.

Oh and I have access to the books now. Woot!

Btw is there anything that you can tell us about the starting location that I could use as a basis for a character background?

The adventure takes place on the borderlands of Cormyr near the Thunderpeaks.

I talked to my brother and he is thinking of running a Ranger. He is thinking of either a Bow specialized elven ranger or if some else is running a bow ranger he is thinking an Eladrin two weapon fighting ranger.
I sent my nephew an email to see if he had any idea what he wants to run.

Ok so in terms of roles we have a "leader" (Warlord) and a "striker" (Ranger), so I may make a character to fill the "defender" role. I'm leaning towards a paladin, since they look pretty nifty in this edition. Not sure what race yet.

You could be my dragonborn brother, if you felt like it. Maybe you're all "The gods are mighty, and here is proof!" while I'm "The gods are full of it, look at me without them!" A racial variety might be good too, though.

Yeah especially since Pally's are the only ones who start with plate proficiency.

I talked with my nephew and he will probably play a ranged ranger and my brother is going to do a dual-wield ranger.
