Name Conventions

Kevin asked about and I remembered that I had set up naming conventions 7 years ago - and I managed to find them.

In the northern towns, where you start, these are followed less strictly. Newzan who no longer serve a house have no house name, which makes them part of the unplaced in the eyes of traditional Newzan.

Newzan are of the form first name, family name, caste prefix, house
name. The full name is rarely used. In talking to a neighbor or
such, first and family name are used. In addressing strangers, first
and house name are used. Family names are usually place names or
profession names

Caste prefix (roughly means serves house as):
Farmer: Mo
Crafter: Me
Soldier: Tac
Philosopher: Yo
Noble: Clo, or none if in the immediate family of the house head.

So Harvey Clamdigger Mo'Selshay would be one of the Selshay's
clammers of the farmer class. Clorus Selshay would be how to
address the head of the Selshay house, whose family name is the House
name.

The Unplaced do not belong to house so have no house name or prefix.

The Uuld follow the form first name "nick name" of mother's name of
father's name. The mother's name is more important than the father's
name since that is more certain. Uuld pick a nick name when reaching
adult hood, sometimes changing nick names in later life. They vary
whether they prefer to be addressed by their nick name or given
name. Example Harry "The Rock" of Betty, of John. Later usually
referred to as Harry "The Bitter".

Quoess names follow the form given name, secret name, family name,
lord's name. The secret name is given in an adulthood ceremony and
is known only by the namer and the person's most trusted family
members. The lord's or Great One's name is used only when speaking
to strangers or declaring one's loyalty to a lord.
